Placing images of contemporary Pride celebrations alongside images of Pride protests from four decades ago highlights the evolution of the LGBTQ+ rights movement. The vibrant, joyful scenes of today’s parades are deeply rooted in the struggles, activism, and resilience of those who came before. This juxtaposition serves as a reminder that Pride was born out of protest, from New York’s Stonewall Riots in 1969, through the emergence of Lesbian and Gay marches in the 1970’s and 1980’s, to the anti-Clause 28 marches and protests in 1988 London. The visibility and freedoms many individuals experience today were hard-won and should never be taken for granted.
