We all own outfits that we would love to wear more (in some cases at least once), but we fear the comments, the snide remarks and being judged. More than that, we are all afraid that what we wear could somehow encourage harassment, abuse and even rape.
I invited women to attend a photo shoot and asked them to bring two sets of clothing. The first set should be an outfit they wear regularly which helps them to feel 'safe' when out and about, the second should be an outfit in which they feel attractive but are often afraid to wear because of the expectation of negative reactions and actions by others.
All the women I photographed admitted they adapt their appearance and behaviour just to feel safe when going out. They believe that Society would blame them if they become victims rather than question why the perpetrators aren't held fully accountable for their actions.
What does this say about the world we live in today?
Eight of these images were installed at the Great Northern Warehouse, Manchester City Centre to coincide with International Women's Day 2022 and stayed on display for a further 3 months
